The shoulder joint is the body’s most mobile joint. It can turn in many directions, but this advantage also makes the shoulder an easy joint to dislocate. The shoulder joint is called a ball-and-socket joint. The ball is the rounded top of the bone in the upper arm (humerus), which fits into the socket. A dislocated shoulder is when the head of the humerus( ball ) is out of the shoulder joint (socket /glenoid).
What cause shoulder dislocation ????
Falling onto your shoulder, especially on a hard surface
Being hit in the shoulder, a direct forceful blow to the shoulder
fall on an outstretched arm
seizure or a severe electric shock
Sports injury
What Are Dislocated shoulder Symptoms ?
Pain is severe in the shoulder and upper arm, making it difficult to move the arm
Limited motion of the shoulder
Deformed shoulder looks abnormally flat.
How to diagnose dislocated shoulder ?
History & physical examination by ur doctor
X ray is sufficient to diagnose dislocated shoulder.
MRI & CT scan is adviced for recurrent dislocation.
Treatment for Dislocated Shoulder
Dislocated shoulders need to be treated as an emergency .We will need to move the arm bone back into the shoulder socket. Once the arm bone is back in the socket, most of the pain will go away. After the shoulder joint is repositioned, you can use conservative treatment to reduce pain and swelling. Ice your shoulder to reduce pain and swelling. Do it for 20-30 minutes every three to four hours, for 2 to 3 days or longer.
Use a sling or shoulder immobilizer.
Take anti-inflammatory painkillers.
When is Surgery needed ??
An orthopaedic surgeon may recommend surgery for young athletes involved in highly demanding activities which increase the risk of recurring dislocations.
Surgery may improve joint stability and prevent a future dislocation.
Surgery for Shoulder Dislocation
Arthroscopic Bankart repair (Key-hole surgery)
goal is to repair the damage that occurred when the shoulder came out of its socket.
This specific type of injury is called a Bankart tear ( injury that occurs as the result of the shoulder dislocation) .
Bankart tear is repaired through an arthroscopic shoulder surgery. This is performed through 3 small holes (called portals). The Bankart repair involves re-attaching the detached capsulo-labral complex to the glenoid using suture anchors. The advantage of the arthroscopic technique is its minimally invasive nature which minimizes morbidity of surgery and hospital stay. Further it allows excellent visualization of the entire shoulder joint and is very useful in detecting and treating other causes of dislocation.
