Spine & Nerve Pain Care · Dr. Hitesh Mangal
Relieve nerve pain. Restore movement. Get back to everyday life comfortably.
A slip disc or sciatica can cause much more than ordinary back pain. Pain may begin in the lower back and travel through the buttock into the thigh, leg or foot.
At Durva Hospital, Kota, Dr. Hitesh Mangal provides evaluation and personalised treatment planning for slip disc, sciatica, lower back pain and related spine conditions.
The spine contains discs between the vertebrae that act as cushions and support movement. A slip disc, commonly used to describe a herniated or prolapsed disc, occurs when disc material bulges or herniates and may irritate or compress a nearby nerve.
Depending on its location and severity, a disc problem may cause back pain, leg pain, neck pain, arm pain, tingling, numbness, burning sensation or muscle weakness.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes symptoms caused by irritation or compression of nerve roots contributing to the sciatic nerve. Pain commonly begins in the lower back or buttock and may travel down one leg.
Some patients experience mild discomfort, while others may find walking, sitting or sleeping difficult.
Slip Disc vs Sciatica
A slip disc is one possible cause of sciatica, but other conditions can also irritate or compress spinal nerves.
Refers to a structural problem involving a spinal disc, such as a bulge, prolapse or herniation.
Describes a pattern of nerve-related symptoms, usually pain travelling from the lower back or buttock into the leg.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms may worsen with certain movements, prolonged sitting, coughing or sneezing in some patients.
What Causes Slip Disc & Sciatica?
Age-related disc changes, repetitive strain, heavy lifting, sudden twisting movements, previous injury, prolonged mechanical stress and degenerative spine changes may all contribute.
However, the cause cannot always be determined from symptoms alone.
Evaluation by Dr. Hitesh Mangal
Dr. Hitesh Mangal evaluates symptoms together with physical and neurological findings, including pain pattern, spine movement, muscle strength, sensation, reflexes, leg symptoms, walking ability and functional limitations.
When clinically required, MRI or other appropriate investigations may be recommended. Treatment is planned by correlating imaging findings with the patient's actual symptoms and examination.
Does Every Slip Disc Require Surgery?
Finding a disc bulge or herniation does not automatically mean an operation is necessary. Non-surgical care is considered whenever clinically appropriate.
Non-Surgical Pathway
Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy can play an important role in selected patients with slip disc or sciatica. Rehabilitation may focus on spinal mobility, core strength, flexibility, posture, muscle control and functional movement.
Complete bed rest for prolonged periods is generally not the goal; activity recommendations should be individualised according to the patient's condition and medical advice.
When Is Further Treatment Considered?
If symptoms remain severe despite appropriate conservative management, or if there are significant neurological findings, additional specialist assessment may be required.
The next step depends on nerve compression, duration of symptoms, muscle weakness, functional limitation and response to previous treatment.
Urgent Medical Attention
Most cases of back pain and sciatica are not emergencies, but some signs need prompt medical assessment.
